  There are No Shortcuts
Yesterday on NPR I have listened to the story of Rafe Esquith, inner-city LA school teacher of 24 years. Simply amazing. This guys is great. He has written a book "There Are No Shortcuts"

Excerpt:

"...I am going to lose more than I win. There are many times when, despite my efforts, I will lose children to poverty, ignorance, and, most tragically, a society that embraces mediocrity.

But that doesn't paralyze me anymore. I have a code, as any good teacher or parent must have. It doesn't matter if the odds are against me. It doesn't matter if I lost a battle yesterday. It doesn't matter if the odds are against me. It doesn't matter if I'm just one fellow trying to fight television, corporations, and a society that hasn't yet achieved Dr. Martin Luther King's dream of judging someone by the content of his character.

I knew that I had to be the person I wanted the kids to be. I never wanted my kids to be depressed or despairing about any bad breaks or failures that they've had. Well, that had to apply to me as well. I now knew that if I wanted the kids to work hard, then I'd better be the hardest-working person they'd ever known. If I wanted them to be kind, I'd better be the kindest human being they'd ever met. Teaching must be by example, not by lecture."

His words inspire. His salary depresses me. Perhaps the title of his book should be a used to call Congress to increase teachers' salaries. Perhaps another book could be written titled "There are No Shortcuts. Pay Up!"

Comments:
He reminds me of a teacher I loved. And this guy, too.

"Listen. This is really it" ~ K.V.

Harry, Vonnegut is my hero. I love this print: "Tralfamadore #2"

Timequake, which I think is still his most recent (his last, or his *victory lap*, as i believe he called it) is one of my favourite books of all time.

Why he is not the lifetime President, King and Pope of the USA I'll never understand .. then we could all just "be" whatever human animals living in clumps together were maybe meant to be

Human Beings are stupid and vicious, and that's that. The quest I think some of us are on is to sometimes be a bit more than that, loving and couragous. Those moments are rare. I would much rather purchase fear for my cowardiance. I am a coward sheltered in a Jesus Bunker, stupid sometimes but almost never vicious.
